Giclee' is a French word meaning "spray" with the term Giclee' print referring to ink jet printing technology used for making high quality art prints. When this technology was first introduced in the 1980's printers used were large commercial machines suitable only for labs and large printings enterprises with big budgets. Now, however, advances in the technology have reduced the size and cost of these machines. Desktop printers are available for around $700. that are capable of producing Giclee' prints rivaling the commericial labs in quality. Using specially formulated archival inks, treated papers, a high-resolution scanner or digital camera, and sophisticated image editing software, the computer-literate artist can self-produce high resolution digital reproductions with sharp, rich colors and lasting quality.
